Autism Awareness Workshop: Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) & Building Inclusive Community

With heartfelt gratitude, we announce that the Global Initiative for Better Health (GIBH), in partnership with the Reaching Families Advocacy and Support Group (RFASG), successfully organized an all-day workshop on Autism for the Houston community on Saturday, June 15. The event attracted numerous families with children on the Autism Spectrum and several dedicated volunteers.

The workshop commenced with an informative presentation by Mrs. Leah Seyoum-Tesfa, followed by a panel discussion featuring experts from the Harris Center on Mental Health and IDD, RFASG, and FEAT Houston. In the afternoon session, parents engaged in discussions focused on sharing experiences and identifying resources available to support their children with autism. Attendees noted the workshop’s significant educational value and expressed a desire for similar programs in the future.

GIBH reaffirms its commitment to supporting these families and, in partnership with other stakeholders, will strive to implement similar and innovative programs to meet their needs in the future.

We extend our deepest appreciation to the panelists, especially Dr. Tranika Jefferson, Ms. Wendy Maurer, and Ms. Leah Seyoum-Tesfa. Our gratitude also goes to our volunteers, Mrs. Dina Abedella Adem and Sossisina Sanders, for their invaluable support. Words cannot adequately express our thanks to Mrs. Fortuna Adam, who worked with us from the initial planning to the completion of the program.

Finally, we thank Abella, Ruhama, Hosana, and Aferata for their responsible and caring attention to the children during the event.
