GIBH holds its first community event

by | May 10, 2014

Global Initiative for Better Health, Inc (GIBH) held its first community event on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Mabee Teaching Theater, on the campus of Houston Baptist University. The purpose of the event was to introduce the vision and mission of the non-profit; bring awareness to the state of health care in Sub-Saharan Africa; and outline its strategy and planned projects in order to advance its vision and mission.

Biruh Workeneh, MD (Board member) initially introduced the non-profit.  Daniel Getachew (Board President), presented background information in maternal and child health in Sub-Saharan Africa and outlined GIBH’s strategy to find solutions to tackle challenges facing health care providers in these settings.  Wonedwossen Goshu (Board Vice-president), presented a summary and his experience of the anesthesia teaching and training workshop that he organized and which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Guenet Degaffe, MD (Board Secretary), presented her experiences gained from a medical missions trip in a rural setting in Ethiopia.

The event was attended by more than 50 community members and supporters.  All who attended the meeting expressed great interest to partner and work with GIBH in many aspects.  Questions were received from the audience which initiated timely discussion regarding further steps to be taken. Many expressed their interest in serving in a voluntary position as the need arose.

GIBH would like to thank all who made this event a great success!
